SHINEDOWN's BRENT SMITH On Performing Live: 'We're Never Gonna Phone It In'

March 19, 2019

SHINEDOWN singer Brent Smith was interviewed by Lux of the 105.7 The Point radio station before the band's March 17 concert in St. Louis. You can now watch the chat below.

Speaking about what it's like for SHINEDOWN to still be performing live nearly two decades into the band's existence, Smith said: "We've never really lost the dynamic of five or five hundred thousand — 'cause we've played for five people before, but we've played for five hundred thousand also. So the dynamic with all of that, it does go back to the fanbase and the incentive of… I've gotta be honest, and I'm only speaking for us, but the fanbase for us, whether they've been there from day one or whether they are just kind of finding out who the band is, they're massively motivating and that spirit and that energy and that appreciation and that love for, at the end of the day, the songs… We've just never really believed in a top. We don't like the 'fake it if you make it.' We don't really believe in 'I have arrived or 'We have arrived.' We still get extremely nervous right before we go onstage, and we would think that something was wrong if we didn't get nervous. It lets you know you're alive. It really just comes down to the fact that we're never gonna phone it in. We're always gonna have to push ourselves, because the fanbase doesn't deserve anything except our one hundred percent at all times."

"Attention Attention", SHINEDOWN's sixth studio album, debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums chart back in May 2018. The follow-up to 2015's "Threat To Survival" marked SHINEDOWN's first full-length effort to be produced entirely by bassist Eric Bass. The 14-song release that tells the story of a character who starts out defeated and slowly overcomes pain and personal struggles and becomes confident at the end. The album also lyrically touches upon Smith's former drug addiction and Bass's depression.

SHINEDOWN kicked off its 2019 "Attention Attention" world tour on February 20 in Estero, Florida at Hertz Arena.
